The Editorial operations of the new BBC Pidgin service will be lead by  Bilkisu Labaran is an accomplished multimedia journalist who has edited, produced and presented high profile programmes across television, radio and online – including Newsday, Focus on Africa TV/Radio and BBC World.

With almost 25 years’ experience, Bilkisu has dedicated most of her working life to the promotion of quality journalism in Africa. Through her work, particularly as the first BBC editor for Nigeria in Abuja, she has helped to train and mentor hundreds of African/Nigerian journalists – some of whom she had inspired to work in journalism in the first place.

During her career, Bilkisu has interviewed many notable people, including heads of state and prime ministers. She has also worked on a number of international assignments. Her career highlights include reporting on the historic 2008 Obama election, Africa’s first World Cup 2010, several Nigerian elections, the Beijing Women’s conference and the handover of Hong Kong to China.

Bilkisu understands development work and is an experienced manager. She previously worked as Nigeria Country Director for the BBC World Service Trust (now Media Action).

Prior to joining the BBC, Bilkisu had worked as a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria, where she gained a Master’s degree.  She also won a Best Actress award in Nigeria (1992).
